Krakow- Summer 2015

The Old Town is surrounded by a strip of parkland as you can see from the green in the map below. We were lucky enough to stay in the Old Town and with only a limited amount of time in Krakow (3 days) we did not venture beyond the park very frequently.

My favourite new food!
Similar to asian dumplings but with different fillings. I chose mozzarella and sun dried tomato.

We took a day tour to visit Auschwitz.

Auschwitz 1- Concentration camp

A selection of the blocks have been turned into a museum. In one of the blocks we entered we were confronted by mass storage of the jewish peoples possessions. The photo above shows a pile of glasses. There were rooms full of suitcases, shoes, fake limbs and another full of hair (some still in plats). After being gassed anything of value was taken from them eg. gold fillings and hair. There were samples of textiles made from the hair.

The infamous block 11 known as "the death block" or central camp jail.
We were shown suffocation cells, starvation cells and the rooms where they trailed mass killing experiments using Zyklon B.

Auschwitz 2/Birkenau -Extermination camp
These are the images I think of when I think of Auschwitz.

We were told the Nazis thinking was "if horses can live in stables why can't humans?"

A touching memorial, displayed in 23 different languages.
